The Next Steps Mission Statement

People with disabilities and their families are empowered through access to information, and the development of advocacy skills. Individual lives are enhanced and self-esteem is increased by making informed choices. We, the Sauk Valley Next Steps Teaching Team, model advocacy and collaboration. As a catalyst for hope and change, we share information and resources, to promote an enlightened society, which nutures the dreams of all citizens.

Purpose : Next Steps is a training and resource system, teaching parents and care-givers to plan and advocate for children and youth with disabilities. All team training has a career education foundation.

Philosophy : Parent-professional consumer collaboration is the foundation for developing teams and teamwork. A collaborative initial team training and ongoing technical assistance system, promote maintenance of this philosophy in all program efforts.

Next Steps team members are parents or family members, persons with disabilities, professionals in rehabilitation, education, social work and other human service disciplines. We are always looking for individuals who would like to join us in helping families and persons with disabilities access information and services.

The Sauk Valley Next Steps team members at the current time are:

Elizabeth Burlingham

A parent of a child with development disabilities who lives in a group home, a Special Olympics coach, a teacher of special education high school students.

Karen Beggs

A teacher of the orthopedically impaired, Special Olympics coach, and leader of a social group for teens and young adults with disabilities.

Kim Walsh

A teacher of special education high school students and former coordinator of special needs population at WACC.
